Dramatic Clashes in Peru – Help by Giving Your Vote

June 25, 2009

In the Peruvian amazon, there are heavy clashes going on. Indigenous groups trying to protect the environment and the forest are being repressed heavily by the Peruvian government. The Peruvian government has legislated heavy mining, logging and large-scale farming in the region.

This cannot just be accepted. And it should not go unnoticed. Over 200’000 people have already given their vote to set a sign to the Peruvian government. We are not accepting this! Help the indigenous people help the rainforest!

LISTE 09 States A Good Year 2009

June 18, 2009

As Basler Zeitung states, LISTE09 has rated this year’s fair a success. Good sales and an average of 1800 visitors per day, although there were less US-Americans. Probably the ones who always visited to invest in art have other things to worry about at the moment.

Volta5 in Markthalle Basel – A Relief

June 15, 2009

Visiting Volta5 in Markthalle Basel was a very nice surprise after all the other fairs. Refreshing art, proximity to the visitors and a great location made this year’s Volta a true preference.

Art Basel has been an art market for years and, of course, is meant to be. While you are in there, you see no humour, no self-irony. From the art to the visitors, everything is very serious, very businessy, very styled. For those who come to buy, this is of course a great happening, and it is meant to be that way.

LISTE, then, used to be a new and refreshing fair for some years, but it has followed the hard rules of platformism and has become a smaller version of Art Basel. Although galleries at times still seem a bit improvised and stalls obviously do not cost as much as in Art, the humour has gone as well.

When entering Volta5, everything was different. Gallery owners actually said hello, even if there was no obvious aim to buy. There were quite a number of artworks which made you smile or laugh, everywhere the self-irony of the artist was present. And if there was no humour, then it was anger, or critique, but there was always emotion. And that’s what art should be about, isn’t it?

Unfortunately, there was little communication about the fact that Volta5 took place in Markthalle and not, as name and origin suggest, in Voltahalle. And not many people knew that Volta5 was only open until Saturday while the other fairs were open until Sunday. So probably lots of people simply missed it.

Nevertheless, it was probably the most interesting, most honest and most refreshing of the art fairs in Basel. And it is definitely a great tip for next year. Just make sure you get the place and the opening hours right.

Catwalk in Public Space by Reh4: A Great Success

June 12, 2009

Thursday, 11th June 2009, the Catwalk in Public Space by Reh4 took place on Feldbergstrasse in Basel. Nine shops from Basels design neighbourhood presented their fashion. Literally hundreds of people attended.

Feldbergstrasse looked like one giant party. Hundreds of people crowded the sidewalks as the models walked by. From wild and hip to businessy and unadorned: the event gave a complete overview of what’s going on in the fashionscape of Basel and Switzerland. And the visitors were delighted.

Traffic almost came to a halt on Feldbergstrasse. But no one really seemed to care. And only the Art Basel VIP Cars driving by every now and then were reminders of the much bigger event taking place in Basel at the moment. And no one seemed to care about that either. Because this event was about Basel, about designers, about culture and subculture. And as such, it was very much more honest and direct than Art can ever be.

For the organisators of Reh4, the catwalk was a huge success as well. Compared to last year, more than twice the number of shops participated. And the designers who were present this year as visitors will participate in the next year. Catwalk In Public Space seems to have grown to a traditional happening. And it will get bigger every year.

Art40 Basel Vernissage: Size Matters

June 10, 2009

On 9th June 2009, Art40 opened the doors to the public. The halls of Messe Basel were literally flooded with people. While celebs like Brad Pitt, Karl Lagerfeld and Pharell Williams honored the fair in the afternoon with their presence, the evening was dedicated to the commoners.

Close to 300 galleries are displaying contemporary art works. From gigantic pieces in Art Unlimited to classics like Mirò, Picasso, Warhol in Art Edition, the number of works is, like every year, astounding. During the three hours of the vernissage, it is thus not surprising, that only a quick look here and there must do.

There are lots of great and hallucinating pieces and, of course, also a lot of crap, but it’s a walk in a glittering world of its own. Basel really has become the art capital of the world yesterday. And it will be for four days more.

LISTE 09 Basel vernissage – the usual suspects

June 9, 2009

Yesterday, 8th June 2009, LISTE 09 art fair in Basel opened its doors. For the whole afternoon, the preview took place, the doors opened at 6pm for the public. As expected, the number of people visiting was huge. And the 64 galleries surely haven’t minded the rain which drew people inside.

64 galleries from 24 countries, 17 of them new at LISTE, exhibited their pieces to the visitors. Anything new? Not much. Quite a number of political pieces, some very synthetic and constructed, but some few quite interesting. As usual, the sheer number of pieces and also the number of galleries cramped together in the fantastic building, makes it a bit hard to concentrate. But anyway, especially in the sector of installations and video, LISTE has quite something to offer. And it certainly sticks to the roots of being an art discoverer fair.
